Around-Oz: Living the Dream!

Fernvale Village Bakery - Fernvale
South East Queensland

A stop at the Fernvale Village Bakery would have to be a must if you're on the Warrego Highway going from Ipswich to Esk or Kilcoy - about an hour from Brisbane. If you are coming from Ipswich, then it is on the right hand side, just opposite a Council park - the ideal spot to sit and devour your cake, beesting, slice, pie, pastie or whatever takes your fancy.

You can eat Al Fresco if you wish
The bakery at Fernvale

Fernvale is very handy to the wonderful dams area just west of Brisbane. We often stay up there with Terry the caretaker at Captain Logans Camp on Wivenhoe Dam. This is a rather magic place and so handy to supplies in Fernvale. We would go there more often but sadly dogs just aren't allowed.

Mouth watering and prize winning!

We can thoroughly recommend the vanilla slices. Rex loves the sausage rolls. Many people making a day to Wivenhoe Dam, call in on the way through to collect their supplies. Newspapers can be purchased, both the locals and the Courier Mail. There is a small eat in restaurant opening soon just up the corner from the bakery, where the prize winning pies will be a main feature of the menu. A bit like the Pie in the Sky TV series!

Some of the awards won
The shop is spotlessly clean

As well as being Business of the Year in their local shire, Fernvale Village Bakery has won numerous awards for their pies - which range from meat to chicken to venison to vegetable and more! Watch out on a Sunday afternoon, parking directly outside the bakery can be a problem as it is angle parking (not good for a motorhome), but there is plenty of space opposite or just around the corner. Besides don't we need to take a walk if we are going to be a slight bit naughty??

UPDATE 30/10/04

We regret to advise that on the last three recent visits this bakery has failed to meet with our expectations - pies only luke warm, range fallen right off even before lunch. We haven't retried the bread but doubt if we will be back. The business seems to have changed hands. Please email us if your experiences are different to ours.
