Beach Bakery - Kingscliff - Far North Coast NSW

Beach Bakery is not obvious as you crawl along Marine Parade in beautiful Kingscliff, especially if you are coming from the south side of town. Situated opposite the Kingscliff Caravan Park, in a building shared with L.J. Hooker Real Estate and a coffee shop, it is a little gem worth seeking out. Master baker Phillip Rowe opens 7 days a week - 364 days a year (he reckons by then he has earned the right to have Christmas Day at home with a sleep-in). Shop hours are 6 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday and 6 am to 4 pm Sundays and public holidays.

Everything from the many varieties of bread - ranging from standards like white and wholemeal to grain and sourdough and all in between - plus all the cakes, slices and enticing naughtiness - are made on the premises.

"I bake fresh daily," Phillip told me. "The aim is to sell out every day with no left overs. Most days I succeed!" And when you taste things like our delicious Bear's Paw (or Elephant's Foot as Bob insisted on calling it - he reckons it is far larger than a bear!) it's no wonder why. We called in about 6.30 am for some bread, ended up with a Bear's Paw with custard and apple as well. There were already several locals there procuring their fresh daily supplies

"With a choice of freshly baked breads, croissants and more, add our extras of Sydney and Brisbane papers, milk and soft drinks, you can see why quite a few people have their breakfast here!" Phillip said proudly.

So if you are heading through Kingscliff (just south of Coolangatta/Tweed Heads) - or are nearby (it is worth a slight detour) - call in and say hi to Phillip and the lovely Louise.
