Around-Oz: Living the Dream!

Dryden Trailers

Dryden Trailers have been in business for over twenty years. Managing Director, Garry and wife Patricia, who also doubles as the Administrator, started out working from very small premises at Underwood. A coach and motor body builder plus spray painter and panel beater by trade, Garry started out by repairing and repainting J.J. Richards garbage trucks and Kirklands coaches.

Fourteen years ago, he saw a need in the market for the growing horse and pony club, so started building equine transportation floats. Then about seven years ago, an elderly gentleman came back from the US, wanted a trailer home and convinced Gary to make one for him. That is when the new chapter of Pat and Garry’s life started. The diversification into fifth wheeler vehicles was on in earnest.

Now Dryden Trailers build fifth wheelers from 22 ft to 48 ft ---- 48 ft do I hear you say??? Now that is a big one!!! Most customers would average 27 ft to 33 ft. Gary has a range of layouts, which are constantly reviewed to ensure the best possible utilisation of space. Interiors are designed and colour co-ordinated by Pat and she has excellent taste as can be seen from the photos later on the page. Production Manager, Paul, started work as a welder and forms the third member of the management team.

All the cabinetry, welding, fitting and electrics - everything but the upholstery is done in house. The only reason that the upholstery is outsourced is Pat won’t get on the sewing machine - she doesn’t even sew on buttons at home she reckons.

Amongst the new innovations in the last year or so, are donor trailers for Australian Red Cross. Garry said he had to go to a meeting with about 50 people to say why the mobile trailers would work better than the caravans they had been using previously. Six trailers have been manufactured over the last couple of years - each trailer takes four months to build and everything has to be QC’d by a government department, and all are especially designed to give Red Cross staff and the invaluable blood donors the utmost in hygiene, safety and comfort.

The following is an unsolicited letter received from the Red Cross after the completion of the last trailer ….

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service Queensland (ARCBS-Qld) has now had four mobile blood collection units built by Dryden Trailers in the past two years. They are utilized for blood collection as far afield as Cairns, and have been built to the exacting standards required by the ARCBS-Qld. The units we have purchased from Drydens have been of the highest quality, and we have found the organisation to be extremely professional and responsive to the ARCBS-Qld unique needs. Drydens after sales service is standout, in what seems to be a decreasing factor with many companies, and an imperative for the ARCBS-Qld. The ARCBS-Qld is extremely happy with the product it has received from Dryden Trailers and the excellent after sales service it continues to receive.

Dryden Trailers can be best described a “family” environment where everyone pitches in when needed. All the staff are multi trained, everything from welding to cabinetry. Son Rick does external sign writing. With their production ranging from horse floats to goosenecks to RV homes and fifth wheelers to corporate trailers and display units, it is no wonder that the current premises have been outgrown.

After six years in Beenleigh, everyone is looking forward to the new factory, expected to be ready mid next year. Buying the land and building the new premises are Garry’s commitment to the industry - we are here for the long term - we want to show people exactly that!

It's no wonder Dryden's will be moving new premises!
