Around-Oz: Living the Dream!

Fitting a Glass Top to Your Stove

A nice easy project this one, and a great introduction to the wonderful world of Do It Yourself if you haven't yet given it a try. The Freeway doesn't come standard with a protective glass top over the stove. This is a shame as this unit really needs every spare square inch of bench space it can get. The Suncoaster Sheffield comes with it as standard as do all Leisure Seekers. So first up you need to order in your cover from Electrolux, but only if you have a Spin Flo stove fitted. Just look in the plastic folder that came with your Freeway. Expect to pay around $110.00. Now although you can pop out to Electrolux and actually stroke the product if you so wish, you can't buy it from them, as they are wholesalers. Ours came from Camec in Brisbane and took 3 days. All the screws you need come with the kit. You will need a 1/16 drill for drilling pilot holes through the laminex, a nail and hammer for marking out, a rule and a Phillips head screwdriver.

As the stove and sink are one piece don't fall into the trap of installing the top central with the stove as this will cause the lid when down, to hang over into the sink. The photo on the left shows the best position - roughly line up the outside hinge edge with the outside edge of the black plastic gadget that holds the wire top in place. The next bits work easier if you have a little helper to give orders too. Straighten out both hinges into the vertical position and press against the rear of the stove. Have the right side hinge lined up as above. Put your nail in the hole a tap gently. Try to do the same with the left hinge. Remove the lid. Measure for the other two holes and mark using your nail and hammer. Drill all four pilot holes. You can go right through the top with no problems as all that is underneath is air! Please check this though as manufacturers often move things.

Now the good news is you end up with a better top than the ones fitted to the Leisure Seekers. They have the split glass affair that always seems to get broken at Caravan/RV Shows. Has anyone got the faintest idea why these things split?
