Bike Rack With Coaster Boot Access

|
This interesting bike rack was made by a CMCA member from Tasmania. It is into about Mark 7 as like everything motorhomy things rarely work perfectly the first time round. This design is good in that it allows easy access to the rear boot. The drawback however is the huge bending moment created by raising up the rack. Initially only the towbar was relied on for strength. This failed as the bumper welds could not take the load. An angle brace was added to the top of the bracket followed by two vertical braces. There is no bracing going back to the rear of the vehicle. The present method has been tested over the last three months. Another way of approaching this problem is to use a Fiamma commercial alluminium rack. This has a "scissor" action and will swing out to allow access to the boot. It MUST attach to the rear wall of the vehicle. Advantages are weight, excellent security and good looking. Drawback is a cost approaching $400.00. |
