Illegal
Gas Cylinders on Imported Motorhomes
| Despite the superb range and choice of 100% Australian made motorhomes and 5th Wheelers, used imports are sadly growing in numbers. Buyers should be aware of the myriad of Australian rules that imports must comply with - particularly electrical, gas and the 60% rule. The gas bottle system pictured below on a typical American import is 100% illegal in Australia, as the regulations clearly state that the bottles MUST be contained within a vented enclosure within the external confines of the vehicle. Even though this vehicle possibly has a gas certificate, in the event of an accident the owner would have zero insurance, due to regulation non-compliance. Should the exploding cylinders cause a death as a result of a rear end collision, then the registered owner would be in a very serious legal predicament. Such motorhomes tend to obtain a gas certificate by going to a normal gas fitter (not an RV specialist) who may well be totally unaware of current regulations. Buyers contemplating such a purchase would be well advised to seek professional assistance before entering into any purchase. Remember that you MUST have a gas certificate in order to onsell any RV. |
