Legal Lockable Gas Compartment

The gas regulations prohibit the locking of the door on external gas compartments. Many motorhomers ignore this regulation for fear of having their gas bottles stolen. The regs state that it must be possible to open the door without the use of "tools". A key for the purposes of the act is described as a tool. In our own naive way we used to think this was a load of rubbish - that is until we saw a Coaster catch fire at Barcaldine and it was impossible to turn the gas off as the box was well and truly locked. Ray Fountain and Garry Dryden of Dryden Trailers (the 5th wheeler people) have both come up with a unique solution that gives wonderful bottle security against thieving but easily complies with the regs. Before getting too excited please remember that this has only passed by the inspectors in Queensland so far! Anyway all that has happened in Ray's rig is a small access hatch has been made in the middle of the main LOCKED door. The access door just pulls open.

Garry Dryden has taken a much simpler approach and put a lock on the gas door for security yet allowing access to the bottle cocks via a fist sized access hole. The photo below is on a Dryden 5th Wheeler and the gas bottles are mounted in a beautifully vented enclosure.
