Tensioning an Aussie Traveller Awning

Rather oddly most Winnebagos leave the factory with far too little tension on the awning roller. Looking at your Aussie Traveller instructions is a bit daunting due to all the warnings! This job is best attempted at a club weekend where lots of willing helpers are on hand. All you need to do is release one end and wind it up the same as you would tension an ordinary house blind. Sounds easy but believe us it isn't the first time you have a bash at doing it on your own!

First up you need to hold the roller securely. The easiest way to do this is to insert a tool of the appropriate diameter into the hole on the shaft. We used a set of Allen keys. This worked well as they came attached to a holder. See the picture above left. Next you need to completely remove the top bracket - the end WITHOUT the ratchet. Your helpers need to be hanging onto the roller for grim death before you do this though, otherwise it will completely unwind.

Next wind on more tension by turning the bracket in the direction of most resistance. We wound on three more turns. Best not to overdo it. You know you have toooooo much tension if your roller gets ridges in it when stowed. You may have to experiment with the number of turns. We have done this for several buddies and have found three works great if before you start the awning wont go up without a bit of help. Whilst you have the awning roller down it is a good move to lubricate the ratchet assembly on the other end. We use the excellent Queensland product - INNOX as it has no silicone and really resists water. If you neglect doing this you run the risk of awning ballooning. There is a bit about this on this page.
