We have always had a soft spot for camping in showgrounds whenever possible. The show society people are usually the salt of the earth and most of them are volunteers. The Hobart grounds are very large and only 10 minutes from the CBD on an excellent road. On arrival you check in at the WIN TV centre - exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. We thought the attention to detail was very good and way above the norm, with a tourist rack providing info on the next CMCA chapter rally and most importantly bus timetables. They had taken the trouble to download these from the Internet - 3 pages! Also info on all the dog laws operating in Tasmania. Buses by the way leave from stop 30 (Moonah) just across from the main gates - seniors can get a day rovers pass for $2.40! This entitles you to travel ALL DAY on any route. We thought this was rather amazing. The service averages every 20 minutes off peak and it certainly puts our Brisbane service to absolute shame. A big plus for staying at Glenorchy is of course the famous Sunday markets held right here on site on the opposite side of the showgrounds - starting at 8.00AM. We came across the best fruit and vege stand run by the Vietnamese Hmong community. They have the most incredible market gardens just up the road at Moonah. Simply the best tasting carrots and tomatoes we have ever come across. The young lass below even gave us some terrific tips for stirfrys. |

| Huge choice of sites - some a little on the slopey side but nevertheless most acceptable - and mostly nice and grassy. Plenty of toilets. You have the choice of paying a key deposit or taking pot luck with the showers/toilets left unlocked. Unlike most of the rest of Tasmania they use decent loo paper and not those dreadful slippery squares found in just about every council toilet! |

| Loads of water with easy access dump points beside the road, and plenty of power. This is a mixture of 10amp and 15 amp - you may need a 30 metre cord in busy times. They ask you not to dump grey water on the ground, which is fair enough. Dogs on leash at all times. Site fees for CMCA members are an absolutely excellent for a capital city - $5.00 per rig overnight and $10.00 with power. Water is great tasting and very soft, CDMA and GSM work fine and of course TV is perfection, but can be patchy under the cableway for some odd reason. We wont cover all the things you can do in Hobart here, BUT there is a courtesy bus calls at 10:00 AM each Saturday that will take you to the famous Salamanca Markets (Hema 49 C2). The bus is a cream and red Coaster and it drives around the grounds a couple of times - not mentioned in any handout. If you are on a strict budget you are better off catching a normal bus as the service run by Barry's Bus Charter costs $15.00 per double. Of course you do get door to door for your money and is a great idea if you have mobility problems. |

| The following info is for all the light sleepers amongst us. The quietest sites believe it on not are right at the front near the main highway. Most fall into the trap of parking near the entrance side road as these sites are closest to the amenities - our Brisbane Sunshine Wanderers group certainly did. At night for some odd reason this turns into a hoons speedway. On another occassion we camped with the CMCA Blue Gum Rovers right next to the Exhibition Hall. Again this is not a good move as it houses the dodgem cars! |

| Nearby shopping can be difficult. The nearest major centre is Glenorchy Plaza. This is slightly north west of the showground. You can easily walk there is 10 minutes, BUT coming home with parcels can be a bit of a problem as it is all uphill. Driving there come out of the gate nearest the main road and turn left. There is easy level parking if you go in the SECOND driveway past the Village picture theatre. The best major centre with Target etc. is at Risdon. Impossible to walk to this one! Come out of the main entrance gate, go left and then right at the roundabout on the highway. Keep in the right lane and turn right at Risdon Street - 5 minutes. This is a TWO LANE slip road. Many of us muck this up and turn toooooo early at Derwent Street and this leads to nightmare motorhome country! The Risdon centre is about 1km along the road just after you go under a railway bridge. Forget about parking outside as most streets are very narrow and hilly. Parking inside is fair on NON BUSY days. There are ZERO level spots! Most of the two across bays are under cover. We have popped in the piccie below to give you an idea of clearance. We would estimate it at 3.5 metres. If you are towing please don't come inside as most corners are just toooo sharp. |

| Remember that Glenorchy is a multi use venue, so other activities could be scheduled during your visit, so it could pay to enquire before booking in. Avoid Thursday nights as the greyhound races don't finish until 10:30 PM and the PA does the race calls for every meeting in Australia! The trots are on from 4:30PM on most Sundays. We went to these on a wonderful weekend we spent with the CMCA Blue Gum Rovers. Happy hour was spent up in the wonderful grandstand with all the "punters". We had an absolute ball and most of us had $1.00 bets with the fantastic local bookie Harry Beardon. He gave members fantastic odds on horses that didn't have a chance! Most of us were still there at 7:30PM!! Meals are available and are quite good. Most members found that the $7.50 "half serves" were all they needed. Bar prices were also very reasonable. Campers do not have to pay the $6.00 admission to the dogs or trots either. On other visits we went to the wood chopping and a fantastic dog show. Remember all this and you are only paying from $5.00 a night. It must be the best value camping in Australia! You can get more info direct from the Showground on (03) 6272 6812 or by email. In summing up this campsite would have to be the best value spot for any city in Australia and the management just bend over backwards to help motorhomers. Thanks guys - your efforts are truly appreciated by all us "boat people"!! Absolutely recommended! Chrissy
