Around-Oz: Living the Dream!

Swimcart Beach - Bay of Fires - North Eastern Tasmania - Free Camping with your dog as good as it gets!

There is something magic about staying right on the beachfront! This is about as close as you can get without falling off the edge! The sand in these parts is sparkling white without being coarse and gritty. Access is great and the Denning coach pictured above had zero problems getting in even when towing a Landcruiser as well. It should be noted by those with big rigs that this is the easiest access beach in the Bay of Fires area. Water is a problem with the nearest mains being back at St Helens. There is a tank near the beach, but we suggest you don't rely on this supply. Back a bit at Binnalong Bay there is a community tank water supply - just ask at the Newsagent/General Store for directions. The spot shown in the piccie below left is next to a lagoon and is very private. Lots of walking opportunities, however the beach can be a little on the soft side at low tide and is hopeless for bike riding. Maximum stay is a very generous 4 weeks and camping is absolutely free.

You must take your rubbish with you. The drop toilets are serviced every three days or so by the National Parks Ranger and generally are quite good and a credit to National Parks Tasmania. You can free range camp anywhere there is a formed road. Generally the roads are of road base and very good except after heavy rain. The tracks vary a lot from hard packed sand to loose black sand. The track along the beachfront has about zero overhanging branches and most sites are perfect for lots of solar.

Both the photos above were taken from the Denning bus - shows you just how close to the water you can get! The table and seat are part of the furniture! Lots of confusion here with regards to dogs. Notices on the toilets say they must be on leads whilst others scattered away from the toilets merely state that "dogs must be under control at all times". About 50% of campers had dogs and we had absolutely zero problems. To complicate matters further the guide books all seem to have it wrong except Bush Camping With Dogs. Camps Australia Wide 2 say no dogs, as does the very latest Boiling Billy. The information centre in St Helens do get it right, BUT the otherwise excellent brochure put out by the council for motorhomers doesn't mention dogs at all. We asked the Ranger on the spot, so our info has to be accurate (late February 2004).

Fantastic TV reception here with just a Winegard. Good CDMA and around 2 bars with GSM on Telstra. Zero service with Vodaphone. Don't expect to have the place to yourself as it is just toooooo popular. We suggest you find a spot as far away from the turning circles as possible as this will give you the mostly peaceful spots. There is a greatly expanded story on the next beach around at Cosy Corner if you would like more info.

Absolutely recommended!
