Around-Oz: Living the Dream!

BJ - To B or not to B?

This year we have two contenders for the vacant Director’s position. Since we already had a profile of the male, Peter Anderson, I thought it only fair to give the alternate candidate – Bettina (BJ) Eyland – an opportunity too. One thing BJ and Peter both have in common is that they both list astronomy in their hobbies as well as motorhoming. Other interests include bushwalking, fishing and boating.

BJ and husband Peter have been happily married for over 20 years. They live on the southern side of Sydney in a leafy green suburb. “As our home is situated in a neighbourhood only a few minutes from the beach (for walking on the sand) and a national park (for bushwalking) plus there are two nearby rivers for fishing and boating, I reckon we have absolutely the best of all worlds,” BJ said smilingly.

Husband Peter started his long service leave about the same time as BJ’s previous employer was downsizing, so she decided now was the opportunity to spend quality time with her best mate.
Asked why she decided to stand for the Board, BJ thought about it for a moment and then explained. “Peter is doing a degree in Ancient History and Philosophy. He is a the Director of First Year Physics Teaching Laboratories at the University of New South Wales, having worked there for 35 years as a lecturer. While being a home body was fine for a while, I have always been a business woman and I considered my business skills would be advantageous to the CMCA.

“I've chatted with many members and the consensus seems to be that they don't want "women" on the Board just for the sake of being a woman. What they do want is definitely a highly qualified candidate who happens to be female. My experience means that I fill that criteria. The most important trait they want is someone who will, if all other contributions are equal, will provide a woman's perspective. There is the obvious proviso that any female candidate is equally or better qualified than her male opponents."

A love of arts and crafts – knitting crochet, acrylic painting and folk art – enables her to even knit animals for several charities and be involved with Red Cross Evacuation Centres and World Vision. BJ explained, “The previous Board Members of CMCA have all made an incredible contribution to the success of the Club as a whole and I would like to make that the base of my involvement, hopefully as a Director. There is so much talent out there in the membership – it is a bank of experience just waiting to be tapped into.”

Motorhome rentals, insurance, finance, banking, charge cards and her own business consultancy are just some of the challenges BJ has met, including the gaining of a Masters of Business Administration. “Other people consider me a “people person”, BJ said “and I think they are right. I love working with people at all levels of life. There is always something you can learn and always something you can offer in return.”

“I am really looking forward to the election and hope that the other CMCA members will give me the opportunity to make my own contribution to a club which has already given both Peter and me so many wonderful times”.
If you would like to get her views on anything, you can contact BJ by email at bjeyland@iprimus.com.au
Good luck to both candidates – whatever the result, the Club will be the beneficiary.
