Around-Oz: Living the Dream!

Keith and Kay Small
Friendships made on the road!

One of the most beautiful things about friendships made on the road, is that no matter when you next meet up, it is just like yesterday when you get together again and catch up. We met Kay and Keith Small on the way to the 2002 CMCA Rally at Barcaldine. We were waved in at dusk by a group of motorhomers on the roadside at Jericho - maybe we looked lost as we were looking for one of the staging areas (it turned out we had missed it as usual DESPITE the fantastic sign posting always put up by CMCA) - and that started a mateship which all four of us are sure will continue for a long time. After we all returned home, Kay and I continued to email each other on an irregular basis. As we were heading south for website work, it seemed an ideal opportunity to call in at their home on the way back.

Their 5 acres is just out of Port Macquarie and Sascha the border collie/kelpie cross greeted us. Kay and Keith weren’t far behind and Keith had organised a powered site in preparation for our arrival, right beside their carport, so the two Leisure Seekers sat side by side.

Sascha is very human friendly, but is easily intimidated by other dogs, even little ones. Rex eagerly wagged his tail and it wasn’t too long before they were on woofing terms. Sascha shared her dinner with Rex and in return, Rex gave Sascha a bowl of custard for breakfast. Make no mistake though, Ralph the 18 year old cat is definitely the king of the castle. Shadow, the other feline, stayed in the background. Even though he is totally deaf he just looked at Rex and he understood - don’t mess with me. Rex definitely got the message and walked 10 metres to go around Ralph.

Granddaughter Alyssa was being babysat and soon was giving us cuddles - obviously loves her Nan and Pop too.

Keith’s home brew was the best we have ever tasted - must be the tank water. This area has had sufficient small showers and thunderstorms, so they haven’t run out of water, but every square inch of roof space, whether it is one of the sheds or the house, goes straight to a water tank.

We had a fantastic overnight visit - Keith dragged out the barbecue and Kay and I both made salads and we sat on the screened back verandah for a candlelight dinner. There was much laughter and talking, accompanied by red wine, finished off with a beautiful chocolate sponge cake purchased at Bel’s Bakery at Port Macquarie on the way through.

The next morning we took Rex and Sascha for a walk and photographed several local letterboxes for addition to that section of our website. There are only 17 houses in the near vicinity and the properties range from two hundred acres down to five acre lots, all in a peaceful valley. And what did we do after that, had breakfast on the back verandah, and talked some more.

This might sound corny, but it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to think that the chance encounter we made on the way to the CMCA rally at Barcaldine has given us two new friends who might live hundreds of miles away, but with whom we interact so well. Bob and Keith can talk technical stuff for hours. Bob reckons Kay is more like a sister in similarity than my own sister.

We all love the motorhome lifestyle, the freedom it gives you and the lack of class distinction, which is so often found in our society. We probably won’t get together again before the Casino 2003 CMCA rally, but we will be in touch by email on a regular basis.

That’s the nature of true friendship, you just pick up where you left off when you next get together.
