Around-Oz: Living the Dream!

Bob & Anne Caddow
8 Metre Fuso Review - continued . . .

WATERWORKS
Good to see a conversion not going berserk water wise, as the stuff is just so heavy. No separate drinking water tank, but it is double cartridge filtered to its own tap on the sink. A point worth noting though, is very few bother to run a filtered supply to the bathroom for teeth cleaning. We have been caught on this one and got quite sick. All tanks were the excellent Atlas Plastics jobs - made to exactly fit the space available. The washing machine was rather interesting as it was the first little Lemair we have come across installed UNDER the bed! The photo below right shows the "linen" basket.

EVERYTHING EXTERNAL
Bins were very well organised with slide out plastic containers - all bin doors held open with gas struts. Camec security door with a very neat blind solved the privacy problem on the door, caused by split curtains. Robert and Anne flat-tow a Suzuki Grand Vitari using the ever-reliable Falcon 2 A-frame hitch. Doggie Beau has his own bed out under the super strong, 6 metre long Aussie Traveller awning! The murals were truly a work of art and really lifted the outside appearance.

MECHANICALS
The Fuso has a very easy to access east-west "T Drive" motor making access and servicing an absolute dream. This is the non-turbo model, so gives 22 litres per 100. The turbo version improves this figure by at least 5 litres, so it is well worth tracking one down. This one had a fairly low 195,000 kms on the clock with this type of under-stressed motor usually giving 600,000. Suspension is airbags all round. Of course, the roof had to be raised as Bob is a six-footer and the body was lengthened - both beautiful pieces of engineering.

SUMMING UP
We would have liked easier to set up and store dining table and some ventilation around the microwave. We liked the superb finish on all cabinets, the very airy feel bathroom, the modern outside paint job, the clever floor idea, the new ceiling - very smart, Anne's lovely personal touches, especially the quilt, the very unusual splash back tiles. As you can see we loved this unit and it does compare very favourably with commercial offerings up to $100K dearer! It certainly wouldn't look out of place at an "A" Class Rally! As tested, this unit is really only suited for a couple but in superb comfort. This is not a cheap conversion with the finished unit coming in a bit under $200K. However, it certainly looks good value for money and there has been no skimping on anything that we could spot. Lengthening and raising do add a lot to conversions. You can talk to the owners if you wish as they are wonderful people.
