Around-Oz: Living the Dream!

Julie and Peter Myers Fantastic Denning Coach Conversion - for Motorhoming with Children

When you eventually decide to go on the road full time with a seven and twelve year old boy well this is certainly the way to go. Peter designed this conversion himself and subcontracted a professional fit-out with a cabinet making friend. The base vehicle was a Denning Air with a two stroke Detroit V6 diesel motor. The roof was raised 350 mm as both Julie and Peter are very tall. The layout needed to provide a special area for teaching the children whilst on the road. This was very cleverly achieved by making the study area part of the children's bedroom. The layout goes like this. Swivel drivers/passenger seats, living/lounging/dining, then the kitchen on both sides, followed by the boys bedroom, then the bathroom toilet (separate) and finally the master bedroom. There are no slideouts and quite frankly this unit really doesn't need them.

Above left is one of the TV's. Top right shows the etched mirror and pelmet treatment provided by the very talented Julie. Other windows are the Hehr louvre type supplied by Winnebago. There is even an inbuilt stereo to create mood ambience!

The photos above show the extremely clever use of "Mini Orb" corrugated iron. We have never come across this idea in a motorhome before - it looks absolutely fantastic and certainly solves lots of problems. In this case it provides excellent segregation of the "rooms" - a brilliant solution actually giving a wonderful feeling of airiness and more space than is really there. The bathroom has some lovely artwork all done by the children. Note the hanging laundry basket - Julie made this and it works fantastically well.

Above left is the office/boys teaching area. We would kill for an area like this! Above right is the electrical control panel. This was designed by Onsite Power Systems. It uses a single cylinder Kuboto diesel generator pumping out DC only. The system uses a huge battery bank of eight units and an inverter. We have camped with Julie and Peter several times and yes it all works very reliably - much better in fact to rigs costing $400K or more!

The photos above show Dylan's and Jordan's beds. Notice how a heck of a lot of thought has gone into making this motorhome just as good and as welcoming as any land based house?

Peters trade is electrical so this aspect of this conversion is impossible to fault. The photo above left houses the main cable duct attached to the roof. A clever solution to an ever present problem with running cables to lights along the centre of any motorhome.,

Unlike a lot of commercial motorhomes this one has really deep draws making them ideal for pots and pans. Our Winnebago for instance is really hopeless in this vital area.

The shots above give a good feel for the kitchen. Note the two separate water supplies - essential for any motorhomer hooked on free camping away from services. Lots of bench space on the sink side plus even more directly opposite as shown in the photo on the right below

The shots above show more of Julie's attention to detail skills. Note the lovely touch of the hanging basket with fruit. All adds to the feeling that "I'm home"! Even the clock matches perfectly with the colours of the motorhome.

Above is the screen door. This is absolutely ingenious and made by a small manufacturer on the Gold Coast. It has a hidden roller. To close you simply twist the leading edge and pull. The mechanism works flawlessly and looks fantastic. It is however NOT a security door. We get that feeling that with a b it of thought and ingenuity it could be adapted to the ever popular whizz bangs thereby eliminating one of their biggest drawbacks - tooooooo easy for the bugs to get in!

The shots above show the track detail and how the door can lock in any position. The sill is exceptionally strong and should take years of wear before failing. Yes that's Julie hamming it up on the right!

The shot above shows the dining area. To seat extended family it is sometimes necessary to use an extra stool in the hall. This is a wonderful motorhome for entertaining as you can easily get half a dozen adults up the front in one area. You can get more info by emailing Peter and Julie. This unit would be an excellent buy if it ever finds its way onto the market. Congratulations Peter and Julie on a great convesrion!
