Around-Oz: Living the Dream!

New Roamsafe Safety Door to Retrofit to Hehr Doors on Winnebago/Swagman/Matilda etc.

We have owned motorhomes with and without safety doors. Yes you definitely rest easier on those hot summer nights safely asleep behind a strong well ventilated door. What this product does is replace the very flimsy screen door as supplied as original equipment with all Hehr doors. The Hehr door by the way is just about the best in the business and we have seen these doors bend at 90 degrees yet still not fail lockwise. Simply remove the old screen door and replace with a Roamsafe if you really feel you need top protection. Particularly good for those travelling with pets as the main door can be left open whilst you are away for short periods. To say the least it is the strongest door we have ever come across regardless of price. The frame is extruded aluminium using sections way above normal doors. It is available in either security stainless steel mesh or the traditional open 7 mm grill format. Both systems use state of the art fixing making it almost impossible to dislodge. Finish is in powder coated white to exactly match the existing door.

The lock hardware is readily available in any large hardware store, so replacements will never be a problem for the life of the door. The ugly sliding mechanism found on all Hehr doors is completely covered in this design with a lovely "scene" as shown in the photos. The top rounded corners are completely blemish free and the door looks like original manufacturers equipment and not in any way an add on. The product is a DIY project - simply swap the old light duty door for the new one. Well under an hours work using simple tools. All screws are pre-drilled. The door is available as a single or triple lock. As the jamb is completely covered on both sides it is really only personal choice if you opt for the triple lock.

The photos above show the door on a Winnebago Alpine and the two below show it on a 2003 Winnebago Leisure Seeker. It seems to enhance the appearance of both vehicles, as it gets rid of that plastic look.

What sets these doors apart is the way the hinges aren't even needed in the closed position as the left hand side of the frame locks behind the main door jamb. You can actually undo all hinge screws and it is impossible to remove the door. Very clever stuff and a feature we have never come across on any RV door world wide. The photo on the right below shows this interlocking system - it starts just below the curved top. Another quality feature we really appreciated was no forever wearing/rotting out foam seals as found on the original Hehr screen door. Instead slide in mohair is used. This is far more expensive but well worth the extra cost due to being more effective and on course much longer lasting. The photo below left shows the stainless steel locking keeper assembly. This has an interlock which is very tamper proof. The sliding centre section is made from sheet aluminium. We particularly liked the "road scene" - a lovely touch! It's from the Gulf Development Road by the way - we get asked this everytime someone spots it on our own motorhome!

The photos below show the excellent good looks and terrific visibility from the inside of the motorhome. The door is far thicker than the Hehr screen door it replaces. These photos clearly show the interface locking feature on the right hand side of the door. In our view is is simply the best looking door available regardless of cost.

Costing is excellent compared to competing products. Grill type (7 mm) comes in at $395.00 and stainless steel mesh at $550.00. Freight is $35.00 to anywhere in Australia. If you want triple lock it is an extra $65.00. The door is finished in powder coated white, which matches most motorhomes. The finish overall is superb and it will not degrade the appearance of the most expensive motorhome. In our view it looks much neater than the one currently fitted to the beautifully made Swagman motorhomes. The product is 100% Australian made on the Gold Coast up in sunny Queensland by Roamsafe. If fitting a Roamsafe is beyond you handyman Bill Bloye will come to you and fit one as he passes through your area. Phone contact is 0429 477 556. Alternatively there is a DIY story on this page. Roamsafe also intend to fit doors at some future CMCA Rallies.
